Trip Overview: Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return

Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter return initiates with a scenic and adventurous flight from Kathmandu Airport to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla. It is an amazing adventure of a lifetime in itself as the Lukla airport is one of the most adventurous airstrips in the world. From the airplane, the astounding vistas of Everest ranges and other mountain peaks are beyond explanation. It is just like flying over those mighty peaks and feeling their touch with the cool breeze.

As we land on Lukla, the gateway to the trekking routes in the Everest region of Nepal, our EBC trekking commences and we start trekking towards Phakding. From Phakding, we will follow the regular Everest Base Camp Trekking route via Namche Bazaar and continue trekking for a week until we reach our prime destination of this trek i.e. the Everest Base Camp itself.

Things to explore during EBC Trek with Helicopter return?

It is obviously going to be a rewarding journey up to the base camp of the gigantic Mt. Everest. En route, we shall be passing typical Sherpa settlements exploring their lifestyle and culture, their unique food and culinary, arts and monuments like Chortens and Monasteries, and many more which are beyond words.  Likewise, we shall pass through the lush bushes with rhododendron forest and other alpine vegetation, and along the trail, we will spot several species of flora and fauna which are extinct too.

You will get to explore the wonderful mountain scenery; which is simply not seen on the foot trail. It is truly an awesome experience and we assure you it will be the best journey of your life. Needless to explain, the eye-dazzling scenery of views of Mt. Everest, and other mountain peaks like Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Thamserku, and several other magnificent peaks in the backdrop will make our trekking to the Everest Base Camp a remarkable experience of a lifetime.

The picturesque settlements, pristine lakes, waterfalls, suspension bridges, prayer flags, etc. enhance the beauty of the Everest Base Camp Trekking route even more. The exhausted feeling due to long hours of walking through such an off-the-beaten trail is suddenly relieved as we sight the wonderful sceneries surrounding us.

At 5545 meters, Kalapathar offers breathtaking views of Mount Everest (8848 meters), Lhotse (8516 meters), Nuptse (7861 meters), Amadablam, and many other peaks.

Enjoy the view of peaks between 7,000 and 8,000 meters, including Mt. Everest, the highest mountain peak in the world.

Helicopter Ride from Gorak Shep to Lukla

After completing the best Everest Base Camp Trek journey and exploring Kalapatthar – the best viewpoint of Mt. Everest, we will return to Gorak Shep. From Gorak Shep, we will take a helicopter ride along the colossal mountains, glaciers, and high valleys back to Kathmandu. The helicopter ride from Gorak Shep instead of the regular trekking back all the way up to Lukla makes this Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return a unique and worthwhile package.

Especially for those who are bounded by time but wish to step foot at the base camp of Everest, this package is the best travel package in Nepal. Within 10-12 days, you can experience both the trekking journey up to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar as well as manage to return to Kathmandu on time. Hence, this is the perfect use of your holiday in Nepal.

Nepal Horizon Treks & Expedition has specially designed this 12 Days Everest Base Camp fly-out by helicopter trip taking safety and comfort as a top priority and we also have 9 Days Everest Base Camp package for strictly time-bounded people. With the chartered helicopter ride to Kathmandu, one must not need to worry about descending back down via the same route and Lukla flight cancellation.

Trek Difficulty, Comfort, and Safety

Everest Base Camp Trek with a Helicopter return itinerary is meticulously designed to ensure proper acclimatization and exploration by limiting the daily altitude gain. We stay overnight at a luxurious hotel in Kathmandu and the best available lodges have attached bathrooms at most places during the trek.

As safety is our major concern, we make sure to have medically trained expert trek leaders with proper safety backups like Oxygen tanks and medical boxes. This exotic trek best suits families and groups of friends who have less than two weeks to enjoy an adventurous holiday at the cheapest Everest Base Camp Trek package.

Though the Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter return is a luxurious trekking package in Nepal, it is highly recommended to have sound physical fitness and wellness before embarking on the trek. Regarding the prior trekking experience, it is not mandatory to have some preparation for the trek before you actually embark on the Everest Base Camp Trek is a wise decision. It is because we shall be walking for 4-5 hours a day on average while we trek up to EBC which requires a good level of stamina and wellness.

Best Time to Trek Everest Base Camp

Before traveling to the Everest region, it is very important to schedule your trip dates wisely. It is because the weather condition plays a very essential role in the Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return. The Lukla flight often gets delayed because of unfavorable weather.

That is why Nepal Horizon Treks and Expedition would suggest making your travel date fall during either the autumn season or the season of Spring. These two seasons are highly favorable and the weather conditions, as well as the trekking routes, are best for trekking to Everest Base Camp. To be more precise, the months from Sept-Nov, and Mar-May are perfect months for this trek. Let's discuss the views and the weather conditions in detail

Spring season ( March to April )

The Spring season is the most favorable season for the Everest base camp helicopter tour which goes from March to April. In the spring season, the weather is generally calm and perfect for high-altitude climbing. The trial’s magnificent views of a clear sky and vibrant rhododendrons, in addition to the sunny skies, definitely contribute to the experience. However, even the season with the nicest weather has a cost. The location gets a little crowded during the hot season.

The mountain can still be climbed in May, just before the monsoon, but you might end up facing other climbers who have already completed a series of rotations during which they climb the mountains higher and higher while periodically returning to Everest Base Camp to rest before making an attempt on the summit.

Monsoon season (June- August)

Due to the slippery terrain, landslides, leeches, and clouded views, trekking during the rainy season could be quite difficult for trekkers. In addition, the monsoon season in Nepal starts in June and ends in August. However, this time of month brings warmer temperatures and all-day rain. Flying from Lukla, the riskiest airport can be dangerous because of the bad weather. In addition to how you experience the Everest region, flights from Kathmandu to Lukla may be impacted by the weather. Although flying is the most popular way to get to Lukla, flights are frequently canceled when the weather is bad in Kathmandu, Lukla, or on the way.

Autumn season ( September- November)

It is also a favourable and secure time of year for short treks to Everest base camp. A little bit colder than springtime is fall. But the magnificent views of the nearby peaks that you get to take in at this time of year make it worthwhile. The weather is pleasant, the days are dry, and the views are breathtaking, even though it is currently colder than it was in the spring. The area has also been completely cleaned by the monsoon rains, giving it an especially lush and green appearance.

As the rainy season comes to a close, the beautiful surroundings burst into blossom with colourful flowers, the river gushes fiercely, and the cool air offers you a stunning view of the Himalayas. Nepal celebrates its most important festivals during the 15-day Dashain celebration, during which hundreds of animals are killed in honour of Durga, the Goddess of Victory. At the airport in Kathmandu, Nepal Airlines even sacrifices goats on the runway. If you are fortunate enough to get clear views of Mt. Everest, the crown jewel of Nepal, you will surely have the best time in the Everest region in the autumn.

Winter season ( December- February)

The winter season is not a favourable season if you want to experience a safe and comfortable trek. During the day, the temperature during this season varies between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius. The temperature drops to -20 degrees centigrade at night. If you are properly dressed for the chilly weather, winter may be a great season for the real adventure. Enjoy the clear skies and stunning mountain views to yourself. If you bring the correct clothing and attire, you can continue your walk during the winter. With the right gear, which includes thicker clothing, thermal coats, thick socks, gloves, first aid, and more, those who can hike in the cold can do so now.

If you want to avoid competing for space with other passengers, winter is a perfect time to fly. The good news is that the road to Everest Base Camp will be much less crowded as people of the area travel in droves to avoid the cold. Currently, there are also frequent price reductions for flights and tours.

Altitude Sickness during the trek and Prevention

Last but not the least, corresponding precisely with the trip organizer is also an essential part of trekking. The information about the Everest trekking, the weather conditions, gears and equipment to be borrowed or rented upon arrival to Nepal, etc. are very important even though it doesn’t sound significant. Similarly, having knowledge of Acute Mountain Sickness and other altitude-prone sicknesses and prevention is a must.

Short description of Everest Base Camp Helicopter Return

Everest Base Camp Trekking with a Helicopter Return starts with a normal flight from the capital Kathmandu to Lukla, a town in the Nepal North Mid East Himalaya region near Khumbu, where our walk begins as you enter Sherpa territory and experience breathtaking mountain views.

As the adventure begins, you will arrive at the well-known Namche Bazaar, the main town/village of Khumbu, and continue on a picturesque trail to stunning Thyangboche, which is surrounded by lush vegetation, tall tree lines, and a variety of peaks with views of Mt. Everest and the magnificent Amadablam.

Enjoy a tour of Thyangboche Monastery's fascinating interior as we travel beyond the tree line through harsh, windswept terrain and closer to tall mountains to reach our major attraction and last destination, Everest Base Camp.

Admire the magnificent scenery of the high mountains, with views of the huge Khumbu Ice-Fall and glaciers up close. Then, follow the adventure to the highest point of the journey on top of Kala Patthar at a height of 5,545 m, where you will be treated to an incredible view of peaks, including Everest and Mt. Pumori, which are only a short distance away.

Spending wonderful times and having adventures in the most beautiful and scenic areas of the high Khumbu, concluding the scenic and challenging walks with a comfortable helicopter flight to return to Lukla and head back to Kathmandu, leaving you with wonderful moments and indelible memories of your Everest Base Camp Trekking with helicopter return.

Day to Day Itinerary Expand/Collapse All

Welcome to Kathmandu. Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative from Nepal Horizon Treks and Expedition will transfer you to the hotel of your preference. Relax your leisure time in the hotel and we will have an introductory session at our office located at Chaksibari Marg, Thamel. We shall proceed ahead with the preparation and document procedures so as to venture along the Everest trail without any hassles the next morning.

Overnight in Kathmandu. Dinner in Hotel.

Today after your breakfast, we will take an early morning flight from the Kathmandu Domestic Airport to the Lukla Airport. After 35 minutes of scenic and adventurous flight, we will reach Lukla. On reaching Lukla we will start trekking towards Phakding and begin our awe-inspiring trekking journey. We will trek to Phakding for an overnight stay.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After having breakfast in the early morning we will start our trekking to reach today’s destination – Namche Bazaar which is the large Sherpa village on the high mountain and of course, the gateway to the mysterious Everest region of Nepal. We will walk through the UNESCO world heritage site – Sagarmatha National Park. Enjoying the great views of mountains and the floras and faunas of Sagarmatha National Park along with traditional arts and monuments, we will reach Namche Bazaar and stay overnight there.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today we will stay in Namche Bazaar for acclimatization. This doesn’t mean we will be spending the whole day idle. We will go sightseeing and small hikes around Namche. On this day we will be hiking to the Everest Sunrise Viewpoint and then hiking back to Namche. This way our body will adjust to the increasing elevation along our trek to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This is going to be an interesting day full of spiritual vibes with a blend of natural blissfulness. We will walk through various monasteries and temples today. The artistic view of the mountain can also be absorbed through the trail. We will be visiting one of the major highlights of Everest Base Camp Trekking i.e. the Tengboche Monastery. The Tengboche Monastery is the spiritual center of Khumbu valley situated at an elevation of 12,700ft. We will walk across the beautiful pine forest before reaching Tengboche. Overnight in a local lodge.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We will start our trek in the early morning from Tengboche to reach a turning point on our journey. We gain a unique experience of our life on this day while we walk along the trail from Tengboche to Dingboche. Today we will cross the highest suspension bridge that gains its popularity from the spectacular view of Mount Ama Dablam. As we approach the confluence of the Lobuche River the valley will slowly begin to open. After a steep climb across the river, we will reach Dingboche at an altitude of 14000ft for an overnight stay.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today we will rest in Dingboche and explore the surroundings. We will have a great chance to observe the tradition and lifestyle of the Sherpa peoples very closely during our rest in Dingboche. We will also explore the old monasteries nearby the village. Also, this is a good idea to rest in Dingboche for acclimatization as the elevation is gradually rising. Overnight stay in Dingboche.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After early morning breakfast, we will start our trek to Lobuche. We will pass by a number of stone memorials to honor climbers who failed in their attempts to climb Mount Everest. The route also offers outstanding views of Cholatse, Thamserku, and several other magnificent peaks. As the trail drops to Khumbu Glacier moraine, we will have the closest view of Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori, and Mahalangur Himal. We will stay in a local lodge overnight.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today is probably the most thrilling day of the trek. This is the day that we make our journey successful by stepping at our prime destination. After reaching Gorakshep, we will hike up the notorious Khumbu icefall and continue our trek to Everest Base Camp. We shall celebrate this moment and rejoice in ourselves with the spectacular vistas surrounding us. We will have photo sessions and other fun activities to celebrate our victorious trek up to Everest Base Camp. After the session, we will trek back to Gorakshep for an overnight stay.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Kalapatthar is the highest altitude you will reach on this trek i.e. 5,555m. And it is a very popular destination on the Everest Base Camp Trekking route as Kalapatthar is an excellent viewpoint of Mount Everest. The trekkers already been there describes Kalapathhar as the best viewpoint of Mt. Everest along with other innumerable spectacular peaks. We will spend some time observing the great views of the Himalayas and trek back to Gorakshep.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

From Gorakshep, we will escape the regular Everest Base Camp Trekking itinerary and the routes back to Lukla on foot. As this is a luxurious Everest trekking package designed for time bounded people, today we will fly back to Lukla on 15 minutes Helicopter flight from Gorak Shep. We will have a spine-tingling experience during our flight with the mind-boggling views. And we shall take a flight from Lukla Airport on an airplane which will take us about 45 mins to land at the Kathmandu Domestic Airport. You can explore the Kathmandu valley/go shopping or relax in your hotel room in your leisure time.

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return is an alternative package for the regular Everest Base Camp Trekking itinerary which is specially designed for the trekkers with a very short time to be spent in Nepal. This is to escape the trekking route and complete the trip in fewer days than usual. Nevertheless, without letting go of the trekking fun and adventure as we initially trek through the same route as programmed on the regular EBC itinerary. Hence, we return by Helicopter from Gorak Shep instead of trekking back up to Lukla.

Regarding the difficulty of Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return, it is moderate graded trekking. This trek can be embarked upon by anyone with sound physical fitness with proper guidance and instructions. Our trekking guide with take care of everything else and ensure accomplishing the trek. The trekker should be fit and sound enough to walk at least 4-5 hours a day on average.

In comparison with the regular Everest Base Camp Trekking Package, this is somehow costlier as this is a luxurious trekking package and includes the use of a Helicopter. The Helicopter flight is the major factor to add up the expenses on this package. Whereas, it is the crucial factor to make the Everest Base Camp Trekking happen within less than 2 weeks of time-frame.

During the Everest Base Camp Trekking, you will be provided with the best lodges that are available along the trail. However, it is not possible to get lavish accommodations along the entire trail.

To book your Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter return, you just have to find our Booking Form and submit all the required details along with the advanced payment. We will send you the booking confirmation by email.

The highest point during our Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return is Kalapatthar with an elevation of 5,555m. This is the best viewpoint for the close-up view of Mt. Everest along with other surrounding peaks.

To prevent Altitude Sickness during Everest Base Camp Trekking, you have to take proper acclimatization and drink enough water. Also, it is better to carry supplements like Diamox, just in case of emergency. However, our highly experienced and well-trained guide will instruct while you trek along the trail so this is not a big deal at all.

We also have an article about AMS and its prevention.

Well,  no one can predict the weather conditions and if in case even the Helicopter couldn’t take off because of bad weather and low visibility, then we shall wait at Gorak Shep or trek to another destination and fly back to Lukla upon some improvements in weather conditions.

Along the trail, you will be served continental breakfast (toast with omelets, tea/coffee) and for your Lunch and Dinner, you will be served the typical Nepali meal i.e. Dal Bhat with veg. as well as non-veg. items as per your preference.

Additional Information

Accommodation on Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return

Accommodation is usually on a twin-sharing basis on Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return. If are single, you have to share a room with a person of the same sex. If you want a single room, you can get it at an extra cost. Be noted – Single rooms are easily available in Kathmandu and at lower elevations while trekking but at a higher elevation, it is very difficult to find a single room.

You will stay at a star hotel in Kathmandu and the best available hotel during the trek.

Meals on Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return

During the trek, you will enjoy authentic Nepalese food and common international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc.) You will have breakfast and dinner in the teahouse where you spend the night and lunch on the way to your next destination. We will offer all the meals (B, L & D) during the trek while only breakfast will be offered in Kathmandu. We also provide you with a welcome and farewell dinner.

Best Time to Travel

The best time to visit Everest is pre-monsoon spring (March-May) and pot-monsoon fall (late September – December). Trekking Everest in the fall ensures a clear view with blue skies. In spring, the entire hills are embellished with colorful rhododendron and other wildflowers. The higher you get the colder it will be. Above 4,000m, the temperature usually goes down to freezing level. Night can drop as low as -10 degrees while days are mild which is perfect for trekking.

Additional Information for Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return

No trekking company in Nepal can guarantee you the “scheduled departure” as the weather of the Himalayas is highly unpredictable. So we suggest you come with some extra spare days to compensate for any sort of delays or cancellation. Nepal Horizon Treks & Expedition will work hard to find the best travel departure date & time: to save our client valuable time.

Me and my boyfriend went to Everest base camp  for trekking. We stayed at Khangsar Hotel in Kathmandu. Everest  was very beautiful. Dipendra was very friendly and helped us when we got stuck in Lukla due to bad weather when all the planes stopped working. We could have been stuck for more days if it weren't for his help. Thank you, Dipendra!
