"Experience the adventure of a lifetime on the Thorong La Pass Trek — a breathtaking journey through the Annapurna Circuit, featuring stunning Himalayan views, diverse landscapes, and the iconic 5,416m high Thorong La Pass."
Thorong La Pass stands 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) above sea level, making it one of the world's highest trekking routes. This pass links the green valleys of Manang to the dry, Tibet-influenced areas of Mustang in Nepal's Annapurna region. Trekkers see it as a key part of the Annapurna Circuit, a well-known long trek that showcases varied landscapes and rich local cultures. The path leads hikers through different heights, starting in warm, jungle-like forests and ending in rocky, high-altitude areas. Along the way, travelers can see stunning views of mountains such as Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre.
The area boasts a rich culture blending Hindu and Buddhist communities. In villages like Manang, you'll find Buddhist monasteries, prayer wheels, and Tibetan-style buildings. Just past the pass lies Muktinath, a sacred temple complex that draws Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims alike. Because Thorong La sits at such a high elevation, altitude sickness (AMS) poses a real threat. To cut down on risks, hikers should take time to adjust to the altitude in Manang and climb. Taking symptoms like headaches, feeling sick, and dizziness is crucial. If these get worse, going down in elevation is a must.
Hiking across Thorong La presents a tough challenge because of its high elevation, chilly climate, and lengthy walking periods on the day you cross the pass. Yet, you don't need special climbing skills to do it, which makes it doable for fit and well-prepared hikers. The ideal time to hike is in spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). During these seasons, the weather stays steady, the sky remains clear, and you get the best views of the mountains. In winter, heavy snow can shut down the pass. The monsoon brings slick trails and mudslides, which make traveling hard.

Return to capital, trek ends |
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Chame, the starting point of your trek. The journey passes through lush hills, rivers, and terraced fields, offering glimpses of rural life and landscapes. After a long but beautiful drive, you arrive in Chame, a peaceful village surrounded by pine forests and mountain views.
Today’s trek takes you along the Marsyangdi River, through dense forests and dramatic cliffs. As you ascend, the views open up to include stunning peaks like Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. You’ll reach Upper Pisang, a charming village with traditional Tibetan-style houses and breathtaking views.
You follow a high route through the village of Ghyaru, offering panoramic views of Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna. The trail is culturally rich and visually rewarding. After a scenic and challenging day, you reach Manang, a major acclimatization stop with bakeries, lodges, and monasteries.
To adjust to the altitude, you’ll spend the day exploring Manang. You can take a short hike to Gangapurna Lake or the viewpoint above town, or challenge yourself with a side trip to Ice Lake. This rest day is crucial to prepare for higher elevations ahead.
Leaving Manang, you trek higher into alpine terrain, passing yak pastures and juniper shrubs. The air gets thinner, and the landscape becomes more rugged. You arrive at Yak Kharka, a small settlement where you'll rest and acclimatize further.
Today’s trek is short but steady as you ascend to Thorong Phedi, the base camp for Thorong La Pass. The rocky terrain and increasing altitude make it important to go slowly. You’ll rest early to prepare for the challenging pass crossing the next day.
This is the toughest and most rewarding day of the trek. Starting before sunrise, you climb gradually to Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the journey. From the top, you’ll be greeted with awe-inspiring views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. A long descent leads you to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists.
Descending into the Mustang region, you trek through arid terrain and ancient villages toward Jomsom. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki River, known for its deep gorge and strong winds. Jomsom is a major town with an airport and comfortable lodges.
You either take a short flight or drive down to Tatopani, a village famous for its natural hot springs. It’s the perfect spot to relax, soothe your muscles, and enjoy the warmer, greener surroundings after the high-altitude trek.
The trail climbs steadily through terraced fields and rhododendron forests, offering a refreshing change in landscape. You reach Ghorepani, a picturesque village nestled in the hills and a popular stop for trekkers heading to Poon Hill.
Rise early for a sunrise hike to Poon Hill, where you’ll witness one of Nepal’s most iconic views—golden rays lighting up the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After breakfast in Ghorepani, trek down to Nayapul, where a vehicle awaits to take you to Pokhara.
After a well-deserved rest in Pokhara, return to Kathmandu by flight or road, marking the end of your incredible journey through one of Nepal’s most stunning and diverse trekking routes.
