Historical Importance of Chandragiri

According to the history, the hill got its name in 300 BC when last Shruthakevali Bhadrabahu and Chandragupta Maurya visited this place in order to gain spiritual peace. The hill is named after the first rishi Chandragupta who lived here and performed penance here.

The hill was known as Kalbappu in the ancient time before Chandra arrived here. The Jain tradition links the Maurya Emperor Chandragupta nad his teacher Bhadrabadhu with this region. Out of total 106 memorials found at Shravanabelagola, 92 are located in Chandragiri hills. These memorials include about 47 of Monks, 9 memorials of nuns, and 5 of the householders. These monuments belong to 7th and 8 th century.This points out the popularity of custom, and its extensive prevalence on this small hill.

According to Hindu Mythology, The Chandragiri Hill is believed to be the place where Satidevi’s forehead was fallen off her body when the lord Shiva was carrying her dead body at his back. This has been mentioned in many sacred Hindu Books, also.

Additionally, it is also believed that after getting defeated on every attacks, King Prithvi Narayan Shah came and worshipped the temple of Chandragiri Hill and took blessings from Ichhyashwor Mahadev, and finally got victory over Kathmandu Valley.
