Nepal’s restricted area treks, such as those to Kanchenjunga and Makalu, offer intrepid explorers the opportunity to venture into some of the most remote and pristine regions of the Himalayas. These treks are not only physically demanding but also culturally enriching, providing a rare glimpse into isolated communities that remain largely untouched by modern development.
Restricted areas like Kanchenjunga and Makalu are renowned for their untouched landscapes and unique cultural heritage. These regions are true hidden gems, where trekkers can experience the raw beauty of nature and the traditional lifestyle of the local inhabitants. The breathtaking mountain views, diverse ecosystems, and the opportunity to witness traditional Tibetan-influenced cultures make these treks an unforgettable adventure.
The Kanchenjunga region, home to the world’s third-highest peak, is a paradise for adventure seekers. Opened for trekking in 1988, this area is known for its diverse topography, from lush forests to high alpine meadows. The region's remoteness means fewer trekkers, allowing for a more authentic experience. Trekkers can expect to encounter the warm hospitality of the Limbu and Rai communities and explore the region’s rich biodiversity.
Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world, towers over a region known for its challenging trails and spectacular scenery. Trekkers here are rewarded with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and other Himalayan giants. The region is also home to the Makalu-Barun National Park, a sanctuary for rare wildlife and diverse plant species. The trek is a true test of endurance but offers the ultimate reward for those seeking solitude and unspoiled nature.
Due to the fragile environment and cultural significance of these regions, special trekking permits are required to enter the restricted areas. These permits are issued to preserve the natural habitat and ensure that the cultural heritage remains intact.
Kanchenjunga Trekking Permit – USD 20 per person per week, plus additional fees for extended stays.
Makalu Trekking Permit – USD 10 per person per week, with similar conditions for extended durations.
To obtain these permits, trekkers must travel in a group of at least two people (excluding the guide or porter), be accompanied by a government-registered trekking guide, and organize the trek through a licensed travel company.
