Dolpo region is one of most popular and isolated Himalayan region in western region of Nepal. It is paradise unexplored. Nature has blessed this secluded western region with amazing landscapes, unique beauty and fascinating culture that highly resembles to the Roof of the world – Tibet. Opened for trekking in 1989, Dolpo region’s beauty and rugged charm is hard to match, where one can get the feast of magical beauty and have opportunity to get acquainted with nomadic lifestyle and tradition of nomadic people.
Dolpo region trek falls in the rain shadow area of the Himalaya and the geography is similar to Tibetan plateau instead of verdant hills, lush forest found elsewhere in Nepal, at comparative altitude. The people living here are Tibetan descend who follows their own culture and speak their own unique dialects. Trekkers get privilege to experience Bon region – Pre-Buddhist religion.
The ecosystem in Dolpo region are highly preserved and flourishes variety of floral and faunal species, including blue sheep and elusive snow leopard. The magnificent scenery and culture of Dolpo region has been filmed in Oscar nominated movie of Eric Valli “Caravan” and well described in Peter Matthessens masterpiece – one of the best-selling book “Snow Leopard”.
Trip in Dolpo region is challenging as the tourism infrastructure is almost non-existence level and organized tour is very essential. This means you have to make a camping trek, being all the stuffs including tents, kitchens and gears carried by porter from the starting point of the trek. But the rewards are amazing – pristine nature, Bon-Po religion and culture, age-old monasteries, turquoise-tined lake Phoksundo, elusive wildlife, amazing high passes, spectacular mountain views and real sense of wilderness.
Dolpo trekking has been restricted for trekking to protect its fragile nature, eco-system and culture. It is mandatory to obtain special trekking permit to enter the region.
Upper Dolpo Trekking Permit – USD 500 per person for first 10 days and USD 10 for each additional day or equivalent foreign currency
Lower Dolpo Trek Permit – USD 10 per person for week or equivalent foreign currency
To obtain the Dolpo trekking permit, trekker must be in at least 2 in a group (guide or porter not counted), accompany government registered trekking guide and organize trek through government licensed travel and trekking company.
