Pikey Peak Trekking in Everest - Detail Information

Pikey Peak, in the lower Everest region boasts spectacular views of the Himalayas as well as Mt.Everest. At 4,065 metres it is high enough to see unobstructed views of Everest, Numbur Himal, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, Manasula and the Annapurnas. It is a relatively new trek so doesn’t have as much foot traffic as Everest Base Camp and still has all the amenities available at numerous guest houses along the way. It can also be done in 6 or 7 days, so one of the shorter treks, with amazing rewarding views along the way.

Day 1 Starts with a jeep ride from Kathmandu, for about 10 hours give or take. Arrives at the small village of Dhap Bazaar at around 2900 meters, where already you can see beautiful mountain ranges if the sky is clear. You arrive in the late afternoon so have some dinner then get ready to start the trek the next morning.

Day 2 Start the walking early in the morning and you are already walking towards the majestic mountains, through small Tibetan villages and stupas high on the hills. There are Mani stones and prayer flags dotted along the way, Stop for lunch at one of the small homes or guest houses then walk a few more hours up and down the paths to the village of Bhulebhule or Japre at around 2920 metres elevation. In total you can expect to walk about 5-6 hours. A small basic guest house is available where you can have the local Nepali favourite Dal Bhat or momos or noodles and nice teas or coffee.

Day 3 You can get up and watch the sunrise from a hill about a ten minute walk away if you stay the evening in Bhulebhule, again, a stunning panoramic mountain view can be seen on a clear morning. Then head back to the guest house for breakfast and pack up and start walking again towards the Pikey Peak base camp. You will pass through meadows and rolling hills to your side and start to see some Yaks or Naks or Dzo’s along the way as you gain more altitude.  You will pass though some stunning forests and if you are there in the spring there are many Rhoddodenrons which will be in full bloom. Arrive to the base camp after only three or so hours to an elevation of 3640 M. You can relax for the day or walk up to the Peak that afternoon to acclimatize, though the best views are seen morning at sunrise.

Day 4 Get up early to walk up to Pikey Peak and catch the sunrise. An hour or so fairly steep climb and you are there to see a most spectacular view. At an elevation of 4,065 metres you can see the Himalayan ranges waking up before your eyes. A clear view of Mt.Everest and many more mountains, and it has been said probably one of the best places to view Everest. Back down to the base camp for breakfast then to start trekking to Junbesi. It is a fairly long day with a lot of decline to get back down to 2675 metres, a much lower elevation. The walk follows views of the mountains for a very long time, before walking through more rhododendron forests and the old growth forest of Taktor. It is Sherpa homeland so you pass though many Tibetan villages and a number of Buddhist Monasteries. After a  long day you arrive to the pleasant village of Junbesi with a lot of options for where to stay the night. You can sightsee or visit the monastery high on the hill.

Day 5 A shorter trek along a road for 3-4 hours depending on your speed. It is not a busy road so still a pleasant walk. Not too much up or down so a steady pace. A lot of interesting Tibetan style homes to see along the way as well as more Monateries and mani stones. The odd jeep or Tuktuk will pass by but not too much traffic. Arriving to the busier town of Phaplu where there is an airport if you don’t want to take the long jeep ride back to Kathmandu.

Day 6 Leave quite early for the ride back to Kathmandu . Depending on traffic and road conditions can take between 10-12 hours. Or, fly.
